The Smith family may have come through Hawkins County, Tennessee, where the Thomas Gibbons family was living from the early 1780's. At any rate, John's eldest daughter, Agatha, married William Gibbons there in 1806. The John Smith home is thought to have been not far from where the Post Oak Christian Church now stands. His name is on a historical marker in front of the church as one of the trio who formed the church. His grist mill was down Post Oak Road behind the old church. John and Christiana Smith (Christiana was living with her son, John Jr. at the time of her death in Cumberland County and may be buried there) are buried in King Cemetery off Joiner Hollow Road in a grove of trees back of what is now Webster's Rock Quarry. Other family members buried there include: Larkin and Catherine Bowlin and several of their children, Including: Minerva Bowlin Pierson and Anna Eliza Bowlin Ragan (both have markers).
