Letter from Gerald Haas
July 9, 2003
Hi Ed,
I am not a descendant of the Stubers, but when my father-in-law passed away several years ago he had a gold pocket watch inscribed with "Presented to Major L. Stuber 47th Pennsylvania Volunteers. By a few appreciative friends Charlestown S.C. October 14th 1865". It came into my wife's family because her grandfather was a Jeweler and purchased old watches.
What was in the box with the watch is as follows:
1. Gold Watch with winder key
2. Deer skin bag
3. Watch Fob - not gold
4. US Army compass. It could have belonged to Levi, but I'm not sure.
I found his grave in Allentown this year and installed a GAR veterans plate and flag. I also sent for his pension records which I just received last month.
FYI, Levi Stuber was also in the 9th PA Regiment 3 month service. This was in answer to President Lincoln's call for 70,000 men. He is listed as a 2nd sergeant. I believe this would qualify him as a "First Defender". I will send you a picture of the watch, head stone and the 9th PA Infantry history if you wish. Levi Stuber is buried in the Allentown New Cemetery at 9th and Linden Streets. His stone is fallen but still readable.
Gerald R. Haas
We are most grateful to Mr. Haas for all he has done on behalf of our ancestor Levi Stuber.
